Perspectives from The Artist's Road
We are writing this while out in the wilds of Wyoming in a stunning spot called Torrey Canyon. As the name implies, tall mountains rise all around us, some with freshly fallen snow. A clear trout stream rimmed with golden willows and alders meanders through the canyon floor. It is a painter’s paradise. Our mission here is to assist with teaching some of the 175 adult students enrolled for the week at the Susan K. Black Foundation annual workshop in Dubois. Each year, S.K.B. hires the top artists from around the country to teach the students who have been accepted into the program. Instructors from previous years are always invited back, so there can be as many as 15 instructors available each day to teach all types of two-dimensional media and some sculpture as well.
As part of the S.K.B. Foundation curriculum outreach, returning teachers as well as the new faculty and some students spend one morning mentoring the local high school and junior high students at the Wagon Box Ranch. Th…
