A Checklist for Painting Overseas

As travel restrictions have gotten more intense, we have had to get more creative and more selective about which gear we take to travel overseas. A big concern is the potential for lost or delayed baggage, so whenever possible we try to take all of our art-making supplies and equipment as carry-on luggage. We can always replace lost clothing and toiletries, but it isn’t going to be easy to find the right professional art supplies just anywhere. To add to the challenge, different airlines, and even different airport security personnel will prohibit items that others will accept as carry-on. I have taken my ultralight folding watercolor easel with me back and forth to Europe many times as carry-on. On one leg of one return trip, a security checker decided that I had to return to the check-in desk to check it as stowed baggage, but there was no way that I could reverse my progress at that point and still make it onto the plane.
