Painters Can’t Be Sculptors, Can They?
There is no reason why any artist working primarily in two dimensions should not consider the three-dimensional realm of sculpture. We artists need not limit our creative thinking to just pencil and paint or print. The New Oxford American Dictionary defines sculpture as: “the art of making three-dimensional representative or abstract forms, especially by carving stone or wood or by casting metal or plaster” —or any material, such as paper, cardboard, sheet metal, glass, matchsticks, ice, or even food! The material possibilities are endless. As we stepped onto the Artist’s Road long ago, we both realized that art exists first as a state of mind, followed by a state of actions. Therefore, artists can and should be open to making art from nearly anything around us—even the way we choose to live.
