The Nordic Painters of Skagen
From the late 1870s through the turn of the century, the town of Skagen, Denmark, became the gathering place for a group of Scandinavian artists. Skagen is the northernmost town in Denmark, sitting on the peninsula of Jutland. Its economy has revolved around its fishing industry for generations. Its fishing harbor is the largest in the country.
Inspired by the French Impressionists, the colony of Skagen artists painted en plein air, drawn to the area by its light, its vast moorland and endless beaches and the working fishermen, who became one of the most common subjects of paintings.
