When a friend of ours was doing some research on the St. Louis Artists’ Guild he came across the unusual name of one of its members, Dawson Dawson-Watson (1864-1939) and asked us if we were aware of his paintings. We did our own research and learned more about this fascinating and highly skilled artist. For a name that we were not familiar with, Dawson Dawson-Watson was right in the middle of the great artistic developments of the early twentieth century.
St. Louis was just one stop for Dawson-Watson. He was born in England to a very artistic family. His father, John Dawson-Watson was a well known illustrator and academically trained fine artist. He is known for his Shakespearean murals at the Castle Hotel in Conwy, North Wales. A significant collection of his work is housed at the still-operational hotel.
