Anthony Benton Gude is often asked if it is difficult for him to maintain a sense of himself while painting in the shadow of his famous grandfather, who was known for his strong personality and painting style. He responds that he does not feel that he is walking in the shadow of Thomas Hart Benton, but rather that he is walking along side of it and casting his own shadow. He is proud of his family’s heritage and proud of being called a regionalist, a term that was used demeaningly in the time of Grant Wood, John Steuart Curry and Thomas Hart Benton.
