Venice, ItalyMap provided by: www.mapchannels.com Venice, Chioggia, Burano and Murano Italy Venice stretches across 117 islands formed by over 170 canals connected by over 400 bridges in the Venetian lagoon along the Adriatic Sea. Buildings are constructed on wooden piles, which become petrified under water in the absence of oxygen and in the constant flow of mineral-rich water. The city experiences low-level flooding (called acqua alta), regularly following certain tides. An experimental project using inflatable pontoon gates to protect Venice from flooding from the Adriatic Sea is being implemented. Transportation within the city is entirely by water or on foot. It is Europe's largest urban car-free area. Venice was the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi. Enjoy this four-minute mini-tour of Venice and the surrounding islands.
